Students wrote a practice math quiz in preparation for our fractions test later this week. The test will ask about: converting improper fractions to mixed fractions and vice versa, creating images for fractions or fractions or images, comparing and ordering fractions or like and unlike denominators, and creating equivalent fractions.
We completed comprehensive questioning (for chapters 1-4) from our Silverwing novel. Ask your child to summarize the novel so far, and to tell you about some of the main characters!

To start off the new month of March, we began by reviewing our monthly goals. Students handed in their goals for one-on-one conferencing done this week. Conversations around goals and learning will continue into the upcoming weeks as we approach Student-Led Conferences on March 18th and 19th (more information to come soon).
Students are working on generating equivalent fractions using either multiplication or division (reducing/simplifying). See if your child can use division to reduce fourteen over twenty one (answer = two over three). We began learning about Greece, specifically ancient Athens. Ask your child to explain 3 facts they learned today, and about how your class status back then affected your ability to vote or not. A notice went home today regarding our upcoming in-school program for In-Line Skating (rollerblading). This will take place in the gymnasium next week for the kids. See the notice for further information! We worked on comparing and ordering fractions with like and unlike numerators and denominators. Ask your child what the rule is when comparing fractions with like denominators (the one with the smallest numerator is the smallest), or when comparing fractions with like numerators (the one with the smallest denominator is the biggest). Tomorrow we will compare fractions on a number line to further reinforce comparing and ordering multiple fractions.
We began our whole class novel study today! The novel is called Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel, and it makes wonderful connections to our current science unit (air, aerodynamics, and flight). Ask your child to tell you 5 facts from chapter one, Shade. We reviewed what strong readers and listeners do, and your child should be able to explain these reading powers to you as well (visualizing, connecting, questioning, inferencing, and transforming). Reminders: - Our second and final day of skiing/snowboarding will be this Wednesday (Feb 26th)! Please help your child to wear/pack the appropriate clothing and to again pack a large, healthy lunch! We had a wonderful day of skiing/snowboarding at Canada Olympic Park yesterday! Students demonstrated patience, resilience, and joy! We will be going on our second and final day of skiing/snowboarding next Wednesday (Feb 26th). Please help your child to remember to keep their progress card still attached to their snow pants/jacket for Wednesday.
We worked on interpreting improper fractions, such as seven fourths, and converting them to mixed fractions (answer = one and three fourths). We also worked on converting the opposite direction. See if your child can show you corresponding illustrations and conversions at home! Students are diligently working through their writer's workshop stations with the "An Elder In The Making" task. You may see how your child's writing is going via their Google Drive at home! Please help your child to pack the following items for our skiing/snowboard field trip tomorrow:
- knee-high socks preferably - sweatpants or leggings (pants that are flexible); multiple layers incase they get wet - snow pants (or windbreaker pants) - layered tops (t-shirt, long sleeve, sweater) - warm winter jacket - neck tube/warmer or turtle neck or balaclava - toque or hooded sweater - gloves (water resistant preferably) - Big healthy lunch (they DO have a microwave, condiments, and utensils there) Optional: - skiing/snowboard goggles or sunglasses - sunscreen for face (put on in morning if needed) We will be leaving right after attendance in the morning, so please be on time for school! Our second and final date of skiing/snowboarding will be the following Wednesday, on February 26th! See everybody tonight for our annual Culture Night! The doors will open at 5:45pm for anyone who needs to set up their booth, and the event will take place from 6:00pm-7:30pm.
Enjoy the 5-day weekend! Hopefully families get to spend some quality time with one another! School resumes on Tuesday, February 18th. Reminders: - No School tomorrow or Friday (Teacher's Convention) - No School Monday (Family Day) - Skiing/Snowboarding field trip to C.O.P. on Wed, Feb 19th, and then again on Wed, Feb 26th! We began our day by visualizing and writing out fractions that we can see within the classroom. Students are learning about how fractions are part of a whole, and how we can write fractions in two ways: What is there or what is not there. See if your child can tell you a fraction statement from something at home (ex. three fourths of the dinning room chairs are pushed in).
Now that we have a music program up and running again, we needed to write out some personal goals. Please ask your child what goals they wrote for themselves in order to be further successful within music. Our class gets music every Tuesday and Thursday right after lunch. They are currently working on a Cree song! Students were given their Sky Sciences tests back. Please have your child show you their results via Iris, and see what areas your child wrote as areas of strengths, and areas for growth. Reminders: - Culture Night this Wed 12th from 6:00-7:30! Thank you to all of our volunteers who are preparing for the night - we are very excited! - No school on Thurs 13th or Fri 14th (Teacher's Convention), or Monday 17th (Family Day) Students received their math quizzes back (multiples, factors, and order of operations). We reviewed the quiz, noting the areas of strength and the areas for growth. Students chose to take these home, or to leave them in their math folders for parents to see at conferences (March 18/19th). We began our new math unit today: Fractions!
We have been working to complete the documentary series called An Elder In The Making. Day by day, we have been dissecting and reflecting on the topics brought to light. Ask your child what resonated most with them. For the remainder of the week, we will be working on writing a piece that focuses the Indigenous perspective. Reminders: - Culture Night this Wed 12th from 6:00-7:30! Thank you to all of our volunteers who are preparing for the night - we are very excited! - No school on Thurs 13th or Fri 14th (Teacher's Convention), or Monday 17th (Family Day) Has your child told you about An Elder In The Making, the documentary series that we have been exploring? The documentary focuses on the truth portion of Truth and Reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The film focuses on the history of the lands that we continue to benefit from, which is relevant to all Canadian students personally and culturally. Our goals are to:
• Discuss the land and ecology of the southern Alberta area • Discuss, the Buffalo keystone species of Treaty 7 territory • Challenge students and enhance understanding and perspectives of First Nations peoples Ultimately, students will gain a better understanding of their own surroundings (household, school, town/city, culture, country, etc) by understanding different perspectives. The film identifies the connection between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples by highlighting the commonalities between the modern Canadian and Indigenous cultures. We are about halfway through the series of video clips - Ask your child what has resonated with them most so far! Students were given a Sky Science study guide to help with their review of the unit. See if your child brought their study guide home, and if they have any remaining questions or misunderstandings that could be further supported at home. Students will be begin writing the test tomorrow! Reminders: - Vincent Massey's Open House is TONIGHT! (See previous post for further information) - Candy Grams will continue to be sold by Room 22 until Monday, and they will be delivered to students on Wed 12th - Culture Night on Wed 12th - No school on Thurs 13th or Fri 14th (Teacher's Convention), or Monday 17th (Family Day) What an exciting day! Ask your child about how we walked to/from Vincent Massey Jr. High School for their assembly and tour! We listened to their Gr. 7/8/9 Band, we watched student-created videos from the Media Classes, we watched the Drama Class perform, and we toured the entire building. Vincent Massey is hosting an Open House for students and parents to come to tomorrow evening for further information.
