Thank you to all the parents, teachers, and classmates who supported our Celebration of Learning today! The grade 6 students did such a great job teaching their peers about their assigned planet, diligently comparing and contrasting their assigned planet to Earth. The presenters were also mindful of their audience (being more supportive with the younger learners, and provided challenged for the older learners). Our learners then wrote feedback for us (see below). Overall, we had a fantastic day, and we are proud of our efforts! See our Twitter account (@rosscarrock) for some pictures from our Celebration of Learning!

We began learning about the order of operations in math today! See if your child can explain the order: brackets first, then multiplication or division (whichever comes first, reading left to right), then adding or subtraction (whichever comes first, reading left to right). See if your child can solve: 4 + 6 x 5 (answer = 34), or 2 x ( 5 + 3 ) (answer = 16).
We read a poem called "Dear Basketball" written by Kobe Bryant before his passing. We discussed the meaning behind the poem, and the personification of basketball. We talked about how basketball was his passion, and wrote out passions of our own. We discussed the message around living each day to your fullest, and being the utmost grateful for our lives and the lives of those we love. Please feel free to continue this discussion and reflection at home! Our last day of swimming was yet again a great successes! We will be receiving the swimming progress reports in a few weeks time- More info will come when the pool has processed them, and when the reports will be sent home! Next week, Room 22 will be selling Candy Grams for Valentine's Day as a fundraiser. They will be sold during the lunch hour. Delivery will be on Feb 12th. 5 Candy Grams for $1.00! Reminders: - No school tomorrow (PD Day) - Room 23 will be hosting our Celebration of Learning on Monday, Feb 3rd within our classroom! Families are welcome to come and see our Celebration of Learning anytime from 11:00am-2:15pm (with the exception of our 12:00pm-12:45pm lunch break). The students are excited to share their Sky Science knowledge! Please let me know if you have any questions, otherwise, we will hopefully see you on Monday! - On Wednesday, February 5, the grade six students will be walking over to Vincent Massey to receive an introduction and a tour of our feeder jr. high school! We will be walking over at approximately 10:00am, and we will be returning back at Rosccarrock around 1:00pm. We will have our lunch when we return to school (student who normally go home for lunch will be asked to pack a lunch for this date). More information to come next week! - On Wednesday, February 12, we will be hosting our annual Culture Night! Thank you again to those parents who have returned the form stating that they would like to support us with hosting a country. Students from my class demonstrated interest and had common origins for the following countries: Pakistan, Kosovo, Hungary, Syria, Greece, and Metis culture. If you would like to support one of the mentioned countries above (providing food samples, cultural artifacts, flags, art, etc.), please let me know as soon as possible! We will begin splitting up into groups to work on researching these countries next week! Important Upcoming Information:

They did great again today! - No school Friday (PD Day) Our first day of swimming was a great success! Thank you for helping your child to pack a big healthy lunch, a swim suit, and a towel. Some students with longer hair were reminded to bring a pony tail for future classes. Please continue to pack for swimming all week!
Ask your child to explain the difference between a prime number, and a composite number! We worked on sorting the numbers 0-100 into their prime or composite category, and discussed patterns that we saw. Your child should be able to make the connection that if a number has more than 2 factors, then it is a composite number. See how your child is doing with these concepts by asking what multiples of 6 would be (6, 12, 18, ...), what factors of 6 would be (1, 6, 2, and 3), and if 6 is a prime or composite number (composite). Reminders: - No school on Friday (PD Day) - Rosscarrock sweater orders (form and $35) may be returned until the end of the week! - Culture Night is coming up on February 12th (please return form is planning to host a country) We will be going swimming next week! We go swimming Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Friday is a PD Day - No School). Our swim time is in the afternoon, from ~1:20pm-2:45pm. Please make sure your child has the following items packed in a bag:
- towel - swim suit (if your child is wearing their suit under their clothes, make sure they bring underwear for afterwards) - goggles (optional) - a hair tie + hair brush - a second plastic bag for wet stuff - A BIG HEALTHY LUNCH! Pre-order forms for Rosscarrock sweaters are coming home today! The sweaters will be on display at Cultural Night on February 12th as well. This is a fundraiser for Parent Council, so proceeds will go towards supporting Rosscarrock School! We explored "factors" in math today! Ask your child to find all the factors for the number 15 (answer = 1, 3, 5, and 15). We also looked at "common factors" as well as the "lowest common factor" between two or three numbers. Thank you to the first few groups who have presented their planet presentations! So far we have learned about Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. We will continue to learn from one another with these planet presentations through into next week. We are practicing our presentations in front of our classmates before we get to show the rest of the school our presentations at our upcoming Celebration of Learning (more information to come closer to). Our paper-mache planets and aliens are coming along nicely! We will continue to work on these throughout the week. See some pictures below: Please be sure to check your child's backpack to see their latest math test results on the geometry test! The students also uploaded their test results onto their Iris profiles, and they wrote about areas for growth and areas of strength within the unit. Some students chose to leave their math test in their desk for parents to see at the set of conferences in March. Today we began a new unit. Ask your child to tell you what multiples are, and see if they can tell you what the lowest common multiple between 4 and 5 would be (answer = 20).
Wow, what a busy afternoon of designing and constructing! Students were mindful of the art outcomes (technique, creativity, and responding appropriately) while building their aliens today. We will begin the paper-mache process tomorrow! We are looking to collect a few more items for the construction of our planets and aliens tomorrow: - newspapers - flour (a cup or two in a zip lock bag) Reminders: - Skiing/Snowboarding forms and fees are due by tomorrow! - Swimming starts on Monday (more info and reminders to come later this week). This week, we are collecting the following materials for the constructing of our planets and respective extraterrestrial creatures (aliens). We are looking to collect the following material to support our building process:
- newspapers - tin foil - googly eyes - balloons - paper towel/toilet paper rolls - tin cans, jars, or tubs - cardboard boxes - any other recyclable materials to construct our planets and aliens with Reminders: - Skiing/Snowboard forms and fees are due by Wednesday - Swimming lessons are next week, Monday-Thursday. More detail to come later this week! Dear Parents/Guardians:
Alberta Education invites you to play an important role in your child’s education through the Accountability Pillar Surveys. Every year the provincial government sends out surveys to teachers, students and parents as a way of gathering information on the quality of education provided by schools in the province. Teacher and student surveys are conducted online, parents are surveyed by mail. The Accountability Pillar is, simply put, a set of goals Alberta Education provides to schools. Some of these goals include Safe and Caring (an agreement between teachers, parents and students that students are safe at school, are learning the importance of caring for others, are learning respect for others and are treated fairly at school). Other goals are Student Learning Achievements (Provincial Achievement/Diploma Exams), Continuous Improvement (teacher, student and parent perceptions that their school and schools in their jurisdiction have improved or stayed the same in the last three years) and Parental Involvement (teacher and parent satisfaction with parental involvement in decisions about their child's education). Once goals are established and are being implemented in the classrooms, a way to measure their success is needed. The Accountability Pillar Survey is an innovative and straightforward way to measure our learning goals as schools. The Survey’s end report will show a variety of important information to parents, teachers, school authorities, students and the province - information like how we’ve improved, where we’ve remained consistent and what we need to continue to work toward. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4 to 6 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in grades 4 to 6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May, and will be reported publicly as part of their Three Year Education Plan. All surveys are anonymous and are available in a variety of languages. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog. It is extremely important to us that The Accountability Pillar surveys be filled out by students, parents and teachers and returned promptly. Your participation helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving. More details about the Accountability Pillar are available on the Alberta Education website at www.Education.Alberta.ca Brenna Fraser Principal, Rosscarrock School |
