In social studies, we began learning about La Grande Paix de Montreal (The Great Peace of Montreal) today. Students explored when the event took place (1701) and who was involved (new comers from New France, and Indigenous peoples from the Iroquois Confederacy colonies). Ask your child about The Tree of Peace that was planted. We will continue to explore this historic event that helped shape Canada to what it is today, and how it is connected to The Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
We are working on updating our subject-specific vocabulary wall. Ask your child about the vocabulary game we played (it asked about previously taught words from earlier this year). As you know, it is important to continue to maintain the knowledge that we have learned thus far as the P.A.T. tests at the end of the year are cumulative. Students were given individually assigned novels to read over the winter break. Now that we have returned, and students have had a chance to finish their novels, they are now beginning their assigned comprehension questions. Ask you child how they are doing with these! If their novel is at home, please help them to bring it back to school to help with answering some of the comprehension questions. Reminders: Swimming forms are now past due. Please return ASAP if you have not done so already. We worked on reviewing some of the sky science material that we explored before the break - see if your child had write out the 6 main layers of the sun (core, radiation zone, convection zone, photosphere, chromosphere, and corona) and the 8 phases of the moon (new moon, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, and waxing crescent).
We explored classifying triangles by their largest angle (acute-angled, obtuse-angled, or right-angled) as well as by the length of the sides (equilateral, isosceles, and scalene. Have your child draw you examples of each! Next week we will explore classifying quadrilaterals. Now that students have completed the task of writing about winter from the perspective of a snowman, they are now working on creating a watercolour painting to go along with their writing. We will continue with this on Monday! Reminders: Swimming forms are past due! If your child has not returned theirs, please do so by Monday! Students explored the geometric concept of congruency today. See if your child can explain and show you a pair of congruent shapes, edges (using hash marks), and angles (using arcs). The are also working on using algebraic language when explaining congruency, such as using the labels on shapes, for example: < EDC = < PLM.
Students are working diligently on their planet research project. Ultimately, they are analyzing how components of other planets (including their respective moons) Reminders: Report card envelope signatures are past due - please return! Swimming forms are due by tomorrow (Friday). We continued to explore angles within polygons (specifically triangles) today. The students worked through an activity where they sorted polygons into venn diagrams, based on if the polygon was regular (same interior angles and length measurements) or equilateral (lengths are same, but interior angels may differ). We will continue to work on classifying polygons throughout the week.
Students analyzed a current event article on Australia's wildfires. Ask your child what they learned! They can show you the article at home via newsela.com Reminders: Report card envelope signatures are past due - please return! Swimming forms are due by Friday. Thank you to Rafay for presenting on his celebration of choice: New Years! We learned some new facts, and we had a great time predicting about our future within this new decade that we've entered! We had guest presenters from Bishop Pinkham school today come to explain and discuss the option of entering their Late French Immersion for grades 7-9 for next year. Please ask your child for further details. If interested, Bishop Pinkham School is hosting an open house for inquiring parents and student to come to on Thursday, January 16th. There were also some handouts left at the school for those wanting further information as well. As promised to the students, those who returned their moon recording homework from over the break were able to explore creating moon phases with oreo cookies. See some photos below and on our Twitter account (@Rosscarrock)! Reminders: - Please help your child to dress with the appropriate gear for winter many of the students are arriving without jackets, toques/hats, mitts, scarves, etc. - Please return signed report card envelopes if you haven't done so already. - Please return swimming forms as soon as possible (due by Friday). Welcome back, everyone! Thank you to those students who returned their report card envelopes, their assigned novel, and their moon recordings/diary homework! If your child forgot any of these items at home, please help them to bring them back to school as soon as possible.
Your child is coming home with forms for our upcoming field trip: Swimming Lessons! We will be taking 4 days worth of swimming lessons during the last week of January. Please see the stapled set of forms in your child's backpack for further information. The forms are due back by this Friday (January 10th). A Note From Mrs. Fraser: Rosscarrock School is extremely fortunate to have been chosen as one of five Calgary schools that will participate in Alberta Education’s School Nutrition Pilot Program from January 13-June 19, 2020. The program will provide students the opportunity to receive all or part of a daily breakfast consisting of the four food groups. This will be provided at no cost. The program follows the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth, and will provide food choices such as cereal, muffins, milk, fresh fruit and eggs. Calgary Meals on Wheels will provide the food choices offered. Every student can participate. If they are hungry, they can eat! Parents and staff members are also welcome to join them for a meal. The program not only provides opportunities for students to try new foods, it will also provide an opportunity for social interaction outside of the classroom. To learn more about the school nutrition program, please visit, Alberta School Nutrition Plan or contact Somer Gotmy, Breakfast Supervisor and Lead Lunch Supervisor: [email protected] Our breakfast program runs daily from 8:40 AM to 9:00 AM, and is free for all students. Students are to come to the lunchroom doors at 8:40 AM. They will have up to 20 minutes to eat, followed by 10 minutes of supervised play outside. Students who arrive at school after 9:00 AM may ‘grab and go’. This means they are permitted to take certain food items (excluding milk) into the classroom to start their day. We look forward to seeing you on January 13, 2020. Brenna Fraser Principal Each student was assigned one of three novels to read over the break. The students made a plan to read their entire novel over their break (about a chapter a day). Each student will be completing a novel study on their assigned book when we return back from the break. The students are also responsible for returning their moon recording sheet/diary in January as well!
Report cards are going home today, please look for them in your child's backpack. Please sign the envelope and return it on January 6, 2020. Families, thank you so much for all of your support this term. I hope you all enjoy the break and I look forward to coming together again on January 6, 2020. We practiced making reflex angles this morning! See if your child can explain how to create a reflex angle of 260 degrees. Since protractors only measure up to 180 degrees, they will have to strategize. A complete circle is 360 degrees, so by subtracting the wanted measurement from 360, they are able to use their protractor to successfully make a reflex angle.
Most students completed their "Writing about winter from the perspective of a Snowman" task today! Ask your child how they did with attending to the checklist. We will be working on creating a published draft of their work in the new year. Please don't forget to support your child with their moon recording/diary homework! They should be able to see the "Third Quarter" phase as of today! This recording/diary sheet is to come back completed when we return in January please! There will be a annular eclipse on December 26th! The students have been working hard to find answers to the following questions within our sky science unit. Please ask your child about the questions, and see if they need further support with understanding some of the concepts:
Reminders: - Tomorrow (Thursday) is the last day of school before winter break! - Tomorrow is pajama & stuffy day, and the students will get to watch a movie with popcorn in the afternoon (see previous post for further information) - Report Cards will be sent home in sealed envelopes tomorrow! I told the students to wait until they are home to open their report cards so that they can celebrate their successes with family (signed envelopes are to be returned to the school when we return in January please). Reminders:
Tomorrow (Wednesday): Ugly Sweater Day Thursday: Pajama and Stuffy Day On Thursday December 20, 2019, from 2:00-3:45pm, Parent Council will be hosting a movie afternoon. The movie will be the Netflix special Klaus. Klaus is a about a simple act of kindness that always sparks another, even in a frozen, faraway place. Students are welcome to wear their PJ’s and bring a stuffed animal. Parent Council will be providing popcorn and a juice box.
